She started lifting weights at the Qin Huang Dao Sports School in Qinhuangdao when she was 10 years old. Her first trainer there was Li Ting. Her father, Cao Guochen, was also a weight lifter. From 1997 she trained at the Daqing Sports School and since 2002 she has been a member of the Chinese national weightlifting team. In this she is trained by Ma Wenhui under the supervision of Ma Wengquang. In the case of senior citizens, at a height of 1.68 meters, she initially started in the weight class of up to 69 kg body weight (KG), but then switched to the weight class of 75 kg body weight.

In 2001 she became a Chinese champion for the first time at the age of 18. She appeared on the international weightlifting stage in 2003. She took first place that year at the Afro-Asian Games in the weight class up to 69 kg with 240 kg (100-140) in a duel and was then in Hermosillo / Mexico in in the same weight class also Junior World Champion 2003 with 245 kg (105-140) in a duel.

After that, her international career stalled a little because she could not place in the front field at the Chinese championships, as the competition in China was or is very high. In 2005 she won the East Asia Games in the weight class up to 75 kg and in 2006 also the Asia Games in Doha . There she reached in the weight class up to 75 kg in a duel 272 kg (120-147) and thus won clearly ahead of Oo Mya Sando from Myanmar , who reached 250 kg. In 2006 it was used for the first time at a world championship. She started in Santo Domingo (DOM) and got there with 268 kg (118-150) the world title in a duel just before Nadezhda Evstjuchina , Russia , who achieved 267 kg.

In the following two years, Cao Lei proved to be the best weightlifter in the world in her weight class. She won the 2007 World Championships in Chiang Mai / Thailand and achieved a personal best there with 286 kg (128–158) in a duel. She referred Natalja Sabolotnaja from Russia with 281 kg to 2nd place. Nadezhda Evstjuchina, 264 kg, was also doped.

At the 2009 World Championships in Goyang / South Korea , she met the Russian Swetlana Podobedowa , who had returned to the competition after a two-year doping ban and is now starting for Kazakhstan , who was in excellent shape and with 292 kg (132-160) ahead of Cao Lei Scored 269 kg (121-148), and it is to be hoped that the performance of the New Kazakh in preparation came about in a regular way.

doping

The series of post-doping tests carried out in 2016 on the stored samples from the 2008 Olympic Games revealed that Cao Lei had been doped with hormones, among other things . The IOC subsequently disqualified her from the 2008 Olympic Games and her medal was revoked .
