Jin Boyang ( Chinese  金 博 洋 , Pinyin Jīn Bóyáng ; born October 3, 1997 in Harbin ) is a Chinese figure skater who starts in a single run . He is the four continents champion of 2018.

Career

2015/16 season

In the 2015/16 season, Jin made it to the top of the world's seniors. With second places each at the NHK Trophy and the Cup of China , he qualified for the Grand Prix final for the first time . There he reached fifth place. At the Cup of China, Jin was the first figure skater to compete with a quadruple Lutz triple toe loop combination.

In 2016, Jin was the reigning Chinese champion for the third time in a row. He then made his debut at the Four Continents Championships and immediately won the silver medal. He set a record by getting 19.76 points for his quadruple Lutz triple toeloop combination, the highest number of points for a single element in figure skating. He also set personal best points in the short program (98.45), freestyle (191.38) and overall performance (289.83).

At the end of March, Jin's debut at the World Championships in Boston followed . His short program had the highest base value of all participants at 50.73. With the quadruple Lutz triple toe loop combination, it included the element with the highest base value (17.90) of all the elements shown in the short program. In addition, he stood a quadruple toe loop as a single jump. Due to uncleanliness, however, both elements were given a negative rating for the degree of execution (GOE). Jin therefore took fifth place in the short program. The Chinese freestyle also had the clearly highest base value of all participants at 103.10. It included four quadruple jumps, more than ever before in a figure skating program. Jin stood all the jumps and thus became the first figure skater who successfully landed a total of six quadruple jumps in a competition, but with unclean landings, especially in the quadruple Lutz, Salchow and Toeloop. Therefore, there were no significant pluses in the level of execution (GOE). As expected, he lost numerous points in the program components. Nevertheless, this was enough to work your way up from fifth to bronze. Boyang Jin immediately made it onto the podium at his first World Cup. It was the first medal for a Chinese in the men's competition at the world figure skating championships .

Season 2016/17

The season started much worse for Jin than his debut season. With a second place at the Cup of China and a fifth place at Skate America, he did not succeed in qualifying for the Grand Prix final . At the four continents championships , he finished fifth.

At the World Championships in Helsinki , however, the Chinese presented himself in the usual strength. So he showed his best short program of the season on the Spiderman theme. It contained a quadruple Lutz triple toe loop combination, a triple axel and a quadruple toe loop. With this, he increased his best points in this segment to 98.64 points and initially placed fourth in the most technically high-quality competition in figure skating history. Jin opened his freestyle for La Strada - The Song of the Road by Nino Rota with an impressively high and clean fourfold Lutz followed by a fourfold Salchow . In the course of the freestyle, two more quadruple jumps followed, both toe loops, one of them in combination with a double toe loop. He also managed six triple jumps. Jin also showed improvements in the program components. For the first time in his career, the Chinese broke through the 200-point mark in the freestyle (204.94) and the 300-point mark in the overall standings (303.58). In the end, Jin was able to intercept Javier Fernández and Patrick Chan , who were placed in front of him after the short program , so that it was enough for him to jump on the podium. As in the previous year, Jin won the bronze medal. He was very satisfied with his performance in the midst of the strong competition. It was Jin Boyang himself who initiated the new era of quadruple jumps in 2015, which was shown in full for the first time at this world championship.

Season 2017/18

With a second place in the Cup of China and a fourth place in Skate America , Jin qualified for the Grand Prix final . However, he had already gone to the Cup of China with a foot injury and was unable to take part in the Grand Prix final due to this worsening injury. He was also unable to compete in the Chinese championships.

At the Four Continents Championships , Jin showed himself recovered at the end of January. In the short program he broke the 100-point mark for the first time in his career and in the freestyle once again the 200-point mark, so that with over 300 points at the end he was still able to contest the gold medal with the Shōma Uno , who led the short program , and for the first time won a title at a major championship. It was the second overall victory of a Chinese in a single run at the Four Continents Championships after Li Chengjiang in 2001.

At his first Olympic Games in Pyeongchang , Jin showed strong performances in both the short program and the freestyle. In his short program to the music of Tiger and Dragon , he successfully landed a quadruple Lutz triple toe loop combination as well as a quadruple toe loop and a triple axel as single jumps . Its other elements were consistently rated with the highest possible level of difficulty, Level 4. This earned him a new personal best of 103.32 points and a provisional fourth place. In the freestyle to the music of Star Wars , Jin was a quadruple Lutz, a quadruple Salchow , a quadruple-triple-toe-loop combination and six triple jumps. Only in the quadruple toe loop as a single jump did he fall. With 194.45 points, he achieved the fifth best freestyle on the field. All in all, in the end with 297.77 points, he just missed the podium and thus the Olympic medal in fourth on his Olympic debut. His placement still meant the best of a Chinese in the men's individual run in Olympic history.

At the World Championships in Milan , Jin, who was one of the favorites in the absence of Olympic champions Yuzuru Hanyū and Javier Fernández, initially showed a good short program, in which, however, his quadruple toe loop, in which he had come considerably close to the gang, was subsequently rated as underrotated. So he was only fourth in the freestyle. There the Chinese, who had been running consistently this season, jumped very close to the gang again and crashed on all of his four-fold jumps and made further serious mistakes, which in the end resulted in a deduction of nine points and put him on the field with the second-worst freestyle 19th place dropped back. Jin commented on the disastrous performance in the freestyle with a smile.
