Zhuang Xiaoyan

Zhuang Xiaoyan ( Chinese  庄晓 岩 ; born May 4, 1969 in Shenyang ) is a former Chinese judoka who was Olympic champion in the weight class over 72 kilograms in 1992 and the first ever female judo Olympic champion.

Zhuang Xiaoyan took second place in the heavyweight division in 1986 and in the open class in 1987 at the international tournament in Fukuoka. From 1988 to 1991 she won the tournament in the open class, in 1991 also in the heavyweight division. At the Asian Games in Beijing in 1990 , she won the open class by beating South Korean Moon Ji-yoon in the final , while her compatriot Zhang Ying was successful in the heavyweight division .

The 1.73 m tall Zhuang Xiaoyan also fought in the open class at the 1991 World Championships in Barcelona , while Zhang Ying competed in the heavyweight division . Zhuang Xiaoyan defeated the German Claudia Weber in the semifinals and the Cuban Estela Rodríguez in the final and was world champion. At the Olympic premiere of the women's judo in Barcelona in 1992 , seven competitions were held in seven weight classes, the heavyweight being the first competition on the program on July 27th. Zhuang Xiaoyan defeated Briton Sharon Lee in a full distance fight in the first round . In the round of 16 against the Spaniard Inmaculada Vicent she won just as much by Ippon as in the quarter-finals against the Hungarian Éva Granicz and in the semi-finals against the Japanese Yōko Sakaue . The final against the Cuban Estelea Rodríguez ended after 2:42 minutes.
