Claudia Weber (Judoka)

Claudia Weber (born November 6, 1967 in Frechen ) is a former German judoka who competed in the heavyweight or open class. She was world championship third in 1991 and twice vice European champion.

Athletic career

The 1.70 m tall Claudia Weber was German single heavyweight champion in 1987 and 1989, in 1984 she was second and four times third. Weber started at the Judo Club Frechen , later she fought for TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen , with Leverkusen she was German team champion in 1989, 1990 and 1991.

Her first international medal was the bronze medal with the team at the European Team Championships in 1987. In 1989 she reached the finals at the World Cup in Paris and was second behind the Dutch Angelique Seriese . At the European Championships in 1989, Weber finished fifth in the heavyweight division after losing to the Finn Anne Akerblom in the quarter-finals and the Polish Beata Maksymow in the battle for bronze. In 1990 she took second place in the heavyweight division and third place in the open class at the student world championships. In 1991 she reached the final again in Paris and this time came second behind the South Korean Mun Ji-yun . At the European Championships in 1991 in Prague she defeated Anne Akerblom, Swetlana Gundarenko from the Soviet Union and in the semifinals the French Christine Cicot , in the final she was defeated by Beata Maksymow. Two months later she competed in the open class at the World Championships in Barcelona. In the quarterfinals she defeated the French Nathalie Lupino , but lost to the Chinese Zhuang Xiaoyan in the semifinals . Against Angelique Seriese, she won the battle for a bronze medal.

At the German Championships in 1992 Regina Sigmund won ahead of Karin Kutz . For the European Championships in May 1992 Weber was nominated in the heavyweight division and Kutz in the open class. Weber finished second behind Swetlana Gundarenko, while Kutz came third in her competition. In July 1992, the Olympic premiere of women's judo took place in Barcelona, ​​and Claudia Weber was nominated after the European Championships. In her first fight she defeated the reigning heavyweight world champion Mun Ji-yun by judge decision (chui). In the quarter-finals, Weber lost to the Japanese Yōko Sakaue after 2:57 minutes by Ippon. In the hope round Weber won against the Brazilian Edilena Aparecida Andrade and the Hungarian Éva Gránitz . After her loss to Nathalie Lupino in the battle for bronze, Weber finished fifth. In 1993 Weber was again third with the German team at the European Team Championships. In 1994 she won a bronze medal at the World Student Championships in Münster. Her international career ended in 1995.
