Angelique Seriese

Angelique Elisabeth Seriese (born July 12, 1968 in Zevenbergen ) is a former Dutch judoka . She was world champion in 1995 and eight times European champion.

Athletic career

Angelique Seriese was the Dutch youth champion in 1982 and 1983. From 1984 she started either in the heavyweight division, the weight class over 72 kilograms, or in the open class. In 1986 she won her first international tournament at the Belgian Open Championships. She won her first medal at international championships at the European Championships in 1987 , when she won the silver medal behind the French Isabelle Paque . Half a year later she beat Isabelle Paque in the quarterfinals of the World Championships in Essen , but then lost in the semifinals to the German Regina Sigmund . Angelique Seriese won a bronze medal with a victory over Nilmari Santini from Puerto Rico. At the beginning of 1988 she lost to the German Karin Kutz in the final of the Tournoi de Paris . At the European Championships in 1988 she defeated Isabelle Paque in the final. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, judo competitions for women were offered as part of the demonstration competitions. Seriese defeated Margaret Castro from the United States in the semifinals with a coca rating. In the final she won against the Chinese Gao Fenglian by judge decision (Yusei-gachi). In February 1989 Seriese won the final of the Tournoi de Paris against the German Claudia Weber . At the European Championships , which were held in Helsinki in May, she won the semi-finals of the heavyweight division against Beata Maksymow from Poland and against Anne Akerblom from Finland in the final . The next day she defeated Elena Guschina from the Soviet Union in the semifinals of the open class and Beata Maksymow in the final. Angelique Seriese was a double European champion.

After a year break, Seriese came back with a win at the World Cup tournament in Leonding in 1990. At the 1991 European Championships Seriese only competed in the heavyweight division and lost in the quarter-finals to the British Sharon Lee . After two wins in the Hope Round , she won the battle for a bronze medal against the Frenchwoman Christine Cicot . At the 1991 World Championships in Barcelona Seriese finished fifth after losing the battle for bronze to Claudia Weber. In May 1992 Seriese won the final in the open class at the European Championships against the Romanian Simona Richter . At the 1992 Olympic Games , where women's judo was first held as an official competition, there was no competition in the open class. In the heavyweight division Monique van der Lee competed for the Netherlands . Even at the European Championships in Athens in 1993 , Angelique Seriese only competed in the open class. In the semifinals she won against Karin Kutz and in the final against the French Nathalie Lupino . Five months later, Seriese reached the final in the open class at the World Championships in Hamilton by defeating South Korean Mun Ji-yun and then received the silver medal behind Beata Maksymow. 1994 won Seriese by defeating the German Johanna Hagn again at the Tournoi de Paris . At the European Championships in 1994 she only competed in the heavyweight division and won the title by beating Beata Maksymow in the final. In 1995 she lost in the final of the Tournoi de Paris against the Japanese Noriko Anno . At the European Championships in 1995 she only competed in the open class and won the title against Simona Richter. Four and a half months later, the 1995 World Championships took place in Chiba . Seriese competed in the heavyweight division and defeated the South Korean Son Hyeon-mi in the quarterfinals and the Cuban Daima Beltrán in the semifinals . With her final victory over the Chinese Zhang Ying , Angelique Seriese was world champion. In the final of the open class Monique van der Lee won against Sun Fuming , so in the two difficult classes a Dutch woman won ahead of a Chinese woman. For her world title, Angelique Seriese was named Sportswoman of the Year in the Netherlands in 1995 . 1996 Seriese won the heavyweight title at the European Championships in The Hague by beating Johanna Hagn in the final. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Seriese and Hagn met in the first round, Hagn won by punishment (chui) against Seriese, which was eliminated.

Angelique Seriese won a total of ten Dutch championship titles:

  • Heavyweight: 1989, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996
  • Open class: 1989, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1996

She was second three times and third six times.
