Beata Maksymov

Beata Elżbieta Maksymow-Wendt (born July 27, 1967 in Czeladź ) is a former Polish judoka . She won two world championships, three European championships and 24 Polish national championships.

Athletic career

The 1.80 m tall judoka took part in world championships for the first time in 1984 and took fifth place in the open class. At the European Championships in 1985 she won the bronze medal in the open class. In 1986 she won her first European heavyweight title when she won the final in London against the Brit Sandra Bradshaw . At the 1987 World Championships in Essen , she finished seventh in the heavyweight division. In 1988 she won bronze in the open class at the European Championships .

In 1989 she won two medals at the European Championships in Helsinki. After losing to the Dutch Angelique Seriese in the heavyweight semifinals, she defeated the German Claudia Weber in the battle for bronze . In the open class Maksymow reached the final, but lost there against Seriese. At the World Judo Championships in Belgrade in 1989 , she won bronze in the heavyweight division and took seventh place in the open class.

In 1991 she entered the European heavyweight championships only and won the title by beating Cladia Weber in the final. At the Judo World Championships in Barcelona in 1991, she lost to the South Korean Moon Ji-yoon in the semifinals , and she won the battle for bronze against the German Regina Sigmund . A year later, the Olympic premiere in women's judo took place in Barcelona . Maksymow lost her second fight against the Cuban Estela Rodríguez . After two wins in the round of hope, she was defeated in the battle for bronze against the Japanese Yōko Sakaue and took fifth place.

At the European Championships in 1993 Maksymow finished fifth in the open class and received bronze in the heavyweight division. In Hamilton, Canada, she lost the fight for bronze at the 1993 Judo World Championships in the heavyweight division against the Russian Swetlana Gundarenko . In the open class, Maksymow won the final against Seriese and thus her first world title. At the European Championships in 1994 Seriese won the heavyweight final against Maksymow. In the open class, the Polish lost in the semi-finals to Monique van der Lee , also from the Netherlands. Maksymow won the battle for bronze against the Ukrainian Svetlana Lysyanskaya . 1995 Maksymow entered the European Championships only in the heavyweight division. She lost to the French Christine Cicot in the semifinals and won the battle for bronze against the British Josephine Horton .

In 1996 Maksymow finished seventh in the heavyweight division at the European Championships . At the Olympic Games in Atlanta Maksymow reached the semi-finals with two wins, lost the fight for the final against the Cuban Estela Rodríguez and then also the fight for bronze against the German Johanna Hagn . 1997 Maksymow won two medals at the European Championships in Ostend, after bronze in the heavyweight division, she won the final in the open class against the Dutchwoman Françoise Harteveld . At the 1997 World Championships in Paris , she won the bronze medal in the heavyweight division by defeating Cuban Daima Beltrán . In 1998 Maksymow reached the European Championship finals in the open class and lost to Harteveld. Beata Maksymow celebrated her last major international success at the 1999 World Championships in Birmingham . In the semifinals she defeated the British Karina Bryant , in the final she defeated the Chinese Yuan Hua . At the Olympic Games 2000 Maksymow retired early against the US judoka Colleen Rosensteel .
