Gao Fenglian

Gao Fenglian ( Chinese  高 凤莲 , Pinyin Gāo Fènglián ; born October 15, 1964 ) is a former Chinese judoka who won four world titles.

Career

Gao Fenglian fought in the heavyweight and open classes. In 1983 she took third place at the tournament in Fukuoka. In 1984 she won the semi-finals of the heavyweight division in Vienna against the German Regina Sigmund , in the final Gao was defeated by the Italian Maria Theresa Motta . In the open class, she lost to Belgian Ingrid Berghmans in the quarter-finals . With victories in the hoping round over Australian Yvonne Zuydam and Japanese Noriko Matsumoto , the Chinese won a bronze medal.

At the 1985 Asian Championships, Gao won the heavyweight title by beating Wen Hua Yeh from Taiwan in the final . 1986 at the World Championships in Maastricht Gao defeated Regina Sigmund in the quarter -finals, the French Isabelle Paque in the semi-finals and Marjolein van Unen from the Netherlands in the final . In the same year she won the tournament in Fukuoka for the first time. By merging the world championships for men and women, world championships took place again in 1987 and were held in Essen. In the heavyweight division, Gao defeated the Italian Motta in the semifinals and the German Sigmund in the final. In the open class she defeated Irene de Kok from the Netherlands in the semifinals and the Belgian Berghmans in the final. That made Gao double world champion.

In July 1988 Gao also won both weight classes at the Asian Championships in Damascus. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, judo competitions for women were offered as part of the demonstration competitions. Gao won in the semifinals after 1:29 minutes against Regina Sigmund. In the final she was defeated by a referee against Angelique Seriese from the Netherlands. The Chinese won her last major title at the 1989 World Championships in Belgrade . In the semifinals she defeated Swetlana Gundarenko from the Soviet Union, in the final she defeated Regina Sigmund. In December 1989 she played her last international tournament in Fukuoka, where she finished second behind her compatriot Wu Weifeng .
