Margherita De Cal

Margherita De Cal (born August 10, 1950 ) is a former Italian judoka . She was world champion in 1980 and European champion in 1980 and 1981.

Athletic career

Margherita De Cal fought in the heavyweight division. In 1972 and 1974 she was Italian champion. Fourteen days after the 1974 championships, unofficial European championships were held in Genoa, Margherita De Cal won a bronze medal in both heavyweight and open classes. In 1975 the first official European championships took place in Munich . In the final of the heavyweight competition, the British Christine Child and Margherita De Cal met, the British won. The following year, at the European Championships in 1976 in Vienna, De Cal won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division. In 1977 she won the Italian championships.

At the European Championships in 1979 in Kerkrade, De Cal reached the final and was there defeated by the German Christiane Kieburg . The following year, at the European Championships in Udine in 1980 , she reached the final again and won over Paulette Fouillet from France. At the end of November 1980, the first World Championships for women took place in New York City . Margherita De Cal defeated the Dutch Marjolein van Unen in the semifinals and Paulette Fouillet in the final. At the end of March 1981, the 1981 European Championships took place in Madrid . With a win over Christiane Kieburg De Cal won her second title. In December 1981 she won again at the Italian championships. She won her last international medal at the 1982 European Championships in Oslo, when she received bronze again.
