European Judo Championships 1997

The 1997 European Judo Championships took place in Ostend from May 8th to 11th . It was the first European Judo Championships in Belgium since 1984 (men in Liège) and 1978 (women in Arlon). The host country led the medal table and provided six title holders.

Ulla Werbrouck in the light heavyweight division won her fourth title in a row. Mark Huizinga middleweight and Gella Vandecaveye light middleweight defended their titles from the previous year. Also Georgi Wasagaschwilli had won a title last year, but two weight classes lower.
