Danny Kingston

Daniel "Danny" Kingston (born February 12, 1973 in Hillingdon ) is a former British judoka . He was European champion in 1996 and third in 1997.

Athletic career

The 1.78 m tall Danny Kingston fought mostly in the lightweight, the weight class up to 71 kilograms. In 1992 he won a bronze medal at both the Junior World Championships and the Junior European Championships. In 1993 he retired from the European Championships in Athens in his opening match against the German Stefan Dott . At the World Championships in Hamilton Kingston won his first three fights and was defeated in the quarterfinals to the Hungarian Bertalan Hajtós . In the hoping round he lost to Rogério Sampaio and finished seventh.

In 1994 he was eliminated from the European Championships in Gdansk against the Lithuanian Kestas Vitkauskas . The following year he finished seventh at the European Championships in Birmingham . Four and a half months later at the World Championships in Chiba Kingston was defeated in the quarterfinals by the Japanese Daisuke Hideshima . With two wins in the Hope Round, he reached the battle for a bronze medal, which he lost to Jimmy Pedro from the United States.

In early 1996 Kingston finished third at the Tournoi de Paris . At the European Championships in The Hague in 1996 , he defeated the Ukrainian Ilja Tschimtschiuri in the semi-finals . Kingston won the European title with a victory over the Austrian Thomas Schleicher . Two months after the European Championships, the Olympic judo tournament took place in Atlanta . Kingston defeated the Russian Sergei Kolesnikow in his first fight and then eliminated against Jimmy Pedro.

At the European Championships in 1997 in Ostend Kingston was defeated in the quarterfinals by Georgi Wasagaschwilli from Georgia . In the round of hope he defeated the Turkish Bektaş Demirel , the Latvian Vsevolods Zeļonijs and in the battle for a bronze medal the Portuguese Guilherme Bentes . After that Kingston took part only once in a major championship. At the 1999 World Championships , however, he was eliminated early against the Japanese Kenzo Nakamura .
