Georgi Wasagaschwilli or Giorgi Wasagaschwilli (born April 19, 1974 in Gori ) is a former Georgian judoka who competed for Greece from 2003 .

Athletic career

The 1.63 m tall Wasagaschwilli competed internationally in the super light weight (up to 60 kg), half light weight (up to 65 kg, from 1999 up to 66 kg) and light weight (up to 71 kg, from 1999 up to 73 kg).

In 1992 and 1993 Wasagaschwilli won the World Cup tournament in Tbilisi, both at half-light weight. At the Judo World Championships in 1993 in Hamilton, he started in the super lightweight. After three victories, he lost in the semifinals against Azerbaijani Nazim Hüseynov , while Wasagaschwilli won the battle for the bronze medal against South Korean Kim Hyuk . In 1993 the Georgian was junior European champion in super light weight, in 1994 junior world champion. At the European Championships in 1995 Wasagaschwilli defeated the Italian Girolamo Giovinazzo in the semifinals , the final he lost to the British Nigel Donohoe . Also at the 1995 World Championships , he reached the final after he had prevailed in the round of 16 against Donohoe, in the quarter-finals against the Turkish Hüseyin Özkan and in the semifinals against the Belarusian Natik Bagirov . In the final he was defeated by the Russian Nikolai Oshegin . In 1996 Wasagaschwilli won the super lightweight title at the European Championships after defeating Oshegin in the semifinals and Donohoe in the final. At the 1996 Olympic Games , the Georgian competed for the last time in the super light weight, after an early loss to Girolamo Giovinazzo and two wins in the hope round he was defeated by Natik Bagirov and finished in seventh place. After the Olympic Games, he won bronze with the Georgian team at the European Team Championships, with Wasagaschwilli competing in the lightweight. At the end of 1996 he became Georgian champion in the light weight division.

In 1997 the Georgian won the lightweight title at the European Championships in Ostend by beating the Russian Anatoly Laryukov in the final . At the World Championships in Paris Wasagaschwilli competed in the half-lightweight division and won the bronze medal after losing to the French Larbi Benboudaoud in the semifinals . In 1999 he lost to the Italian Giuseppe Maddaloni in the first fight at the European lightweight championships , but fought his way to the bronze medal. Wasagaschwilli also competed in the half-light weight at the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 . After two wins at the beginning he lost in the quarterfinals against the Italian Girolamo Giovinazzo. With two wins in the round of hope he reached the battle for bronze against the Dutchman Patrick van Kalken , which the Georgian won after four minutes.

From 2003 Georgi Wasagaschwilli started for Greece, he was the Greek lightweight champion in 2004 and 2005. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, he retired after his first fight in the light weight division.
