Rogério Sampaio

Rogério Sampaio Cardoso (born September 12, 1967 in Santos ) is a Brazilian judoka who won the gold medal in judo in the light weight category (up to 65 kilograms) at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona .

Sampaio comes from a Judo enthusiastic family, he started judo at the age of four. His older brother Ricardo was an Olympic competitor in Seoul in 1988 ; he committed suicide in 1991 out of lovesickness.

Also in 1988, Aurélio Miguel was the first Brazilian to win an Olympic gold medal in judo. For Rogério Sampaio this was an incentive to definitely qualify for the next Olympic Games, which he succeeded. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, ​​Sampaio competed in the same weight class as his brother four years earlier. In contrast to his brother, Rogério was not eliminated in the first fight, but reached the semifinals after three wins, where he defeated the German Udo Quellmalz with a warning (chui). In the final he was able to beat the Hungarian József Csák with half a point (Waza-ari). He dedicated his gold medal to his brother.

At the Judo World Championships in 1993 in Hamilton , Canada, Sampaio competed in the lightweight (up to 71 kilograms) and won the bronze medal. In the years that followed, Sampaio was mostly injured and could no longer qualify for the major international championships. In 1998 he ended his career.

Sampaio runs a judo school in Santos and occasionally works as a co-commentator on judo broadcasts on Brazilian television. In 2001 he was in charge of the Brazilian women's team at the Universiade.
