Yoshiyuki Matsuoka

Yoshiyuki Matsuoka ( Japanese 松岡 義 之 , Matsuoka Yoshiyuki ; born March 6, 1957 in Hyōgo Prefecture ) is a former Japanese judoka . In 1984 he was an Olympic champion in the half-light weight category, up to 65 kilograms.

Athletic career

The 1.64 m tall Yoshiyuki Matsuoka won international tournaments in Budapest and Prague in 1982. At the 1983 World Championships in Moscow he defeated the Italian Sandro Rosati in the semifinals , and in the final he was defeated by Nikolai Soloduchin from the Soviet Union.

Because of the Olympic boycott, Soloduchin was not present at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . In his first fight, Matsuoka defeated the Swede Jörgen Häggqvist and then the Belgian Philip Laats each by a Yuko rating. In the last sixteen he defeated the Briton Stephen Gawthorpe and in the quarterfinals the Romanian Constantin Niculae both prematurely through Ippon. In the semifinals against the French Marc Alexandre Matsuoka won by referee decision (yusei-gachi). Matsuoka won the final against South Korean Hwang Jung-oh through a coca rating.

At the 1985 World Championships in Seoul, Matsuoka lost to the South Korean Lee Kyung-keun in the semifinals , but won a bronze medal.
