Bertalan Hajtós

Bertalan Hajtós (born September 28, 1965 in Miskolc ) is a former Hungarian judoka . Until 1996 he competed in the lightweight, the class up to 71 kg. From 1997 he fought in the light middleweight division. Hajtos won an Olympic silver medal in 1992 and was European champion in 1986 and 1998.

Athletic career

Hajtos was the Hungarian champion in 1984, 1989 and 1990. In 1984 he won the bronze medal at the European Junior Championships. At the European Championships in 1985 he won the semi-finals over the French Richard Melillo , the final he lost to the Soviet judoka Tamas Namgalauri . He also won silver at the Junior European Championships in the same year. In 1986 he won at the European Championships in Belgrade in the quarterfinals against Melillo and in the semifinals against the Italian Ezio Gamba . In the final, he defeated the British Kerrith Brown . In the following year he was defeated at the European Championships against the German Steffen Stranz and finished fifth.

At the Olympic Judo tournament in Seoul in 1988 Hajtós lost after two victories against the eventual Olympic champion Marc Alexandre from France. After two more successful fights in the round of hope, Hajtós lost the battle for bronze against the Soviet judoka Giorgi Tenadze . At the European Championships in 1989 Hajtós reached the final against the Finns Jorma Korhonen by a semi-final victory over Marc Alexandre , which the Finn won. At the 1989 World Championships he lost early to US judoka Mike Swain . With a victory over Korhonen in the round of hope, he reached the battle for bronze against the North Korean Li Chang-su and finished in fifth place. At the European Championships in 1990 he was only defeated by the West German Guido Schumacher ; in the battle for bronze he defeated another German with Mike Schulz , this time from the GDR, who was competing for the last time. In August 1990 Hajtós started at the Goodwill Games in Seattle, after a loss to Swain he finished third.

At the 1991 World Championships , Hajtós met the eventual world champion Toshihiko Koga from Japan after four victories in the semifinals, and Hajtós also lost the battle for bronze against the South Korean Chung Hoon . The following year he defeated the Korean in the semifinals of the Olympic Games in Barcelona , in the final Koga was too strong for Hajtós. In 1993 Hajtós defeated the Italian Diego Brambilla in the semi-finals of the World Championships in Hamilton . In the final he lost to the South Korean Chung Hoon. At the European Championships in 1994 he was defeated in the semifinals against the French Patrick Rosso , he won the battle for bronze against Jorma Korhonen. In 1995 and 1996 Hajtós had no international success. At the 1996 Olympic Games , he won his first two fights and then retired against the German Martin Schmidt .

1997 Hajtós joined the European Championships in the light middleweight division and finished seventh after defeats against the French Djamel Bouras and the German Dirk Radszat . The following year he won all five fights at the 1998 European Championships in Oviedo, in the final he won over Mehman Assisow from Azerbaijan. This second European title after twelve years was the last great success of Bertalan Hajtós. In 2000 he ended his sporting career.

The 1.73 m tall Bertalan Hajtós started for Honvéd Budapest .
