Jorma Korhonen

Jorma Petteri Korhonen (born March 23, 1968 in Kajaani ) is a former Finnish judoka . He was European Champion in 1989, European Championship second in 1990 and European Championship third in 1993.

Athletic career

The 1.75 m tall Jorma Korhonen fought in the lightweight, the weight class up to 71 kilograms. In 1987, 1989, 1990 and 1997 he was Finnish champion.

At the European Championships in Helsinki in 1989 , he defeated the Spaniard Joaquín Ruíz in the semifinals and the Hungarian Bertalan Hajtós in the final . In total, the Finnish hosts won three gold medals in 1989 with Jaana Ronkainen , Jorma Korhonen and Juha Salonen . At the 1989 World Championships Korhonen finished seventh after losing to Bertalan Hajtós in the hope round. In 1990 at the European Championships in Frankfurt am Main he defeated Mike Schulz from the GDR in the semifinals , in the final he was defeated by Guido Schumacher from the FRG .

In 1992 at the European Championships in Paris Korhonen lost to the Austrian Norbert Haimberger in the quarterfinals . About the hope round he reached the fight for a bronze medal, which he lost to the Spaniard Joaquín Ruíz and thus finished fifth. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona he defeated Norbert Haimberger in his first fight and Josef Věnsek from Czechoslovakia in the second round . In the quarterfinals he was defeated by the German Stefan Dott . Until then all fights had lasted the full duration of the fight, so in the hope round the fight against the French Bruno Carabetta ended after 34 seconds.

At the European Championships in Athens in 1993 Korhonen defeated Stefan Dott in the quarterfinals and lost to the Georgian Vladimir Dgebuadze in the semifinals . The Finn won the battle for a bronze medal against Alparslan Ayan from Turkey . A year later Korhonen lost at the European Championships in Gdansk in 1994 in the quarterfinals against Josef Věnsek, in the battle for a bronze medal he was defeated by Bertalan Hajtós. After a break of over a year, Korhonen took part in the World Championships in Chiba in autumn 1995 , but retired from Moldova in his first fight against Andrei Golban . At the European Championships in The Hague in 1996, Korhonen lost to the Austrian Thomas Schleicher in the quarter-finals . After two wins in the Hope Round, he lost to the Ukrainian Ilya Tschimtschiuri in the battle for bronze .

1997 Korhonen retired in his opening fight at the European Championships in Ostend against the Czech Roman Simsa . At the World Championships in Paris he was defeated in the sixteenth finals to the Latvian Vsevolods Zeļonijs . With three wins in the hopes he reached the battle for a bronze medal, which he lost to the Portuguese Guilherme Bentes . In 1999 Korhonen ended his international career with a win at the Finnish Open.

Jorma's brother Marko Korhonen also took part in the 1992 Olympic Games, a weight class under Jorma.
