Marko Korhonen

Marko Aulis Korhonen (born August 18, 1969 in Kajaani ) is a former Finnish judoka .

Athletic career

The 1.70 m tall Marko Korhonen fought until 1992 mainly in the half-light weight, the weight class up to 65 kilograms. However, he won his only Finnish championship title in 1991 in the lightweight.

Korhonen retired from the European Championships in Helsinki in 1989 in the quarter-finals against Sweden's Fredrik Norén . Two years later he also reached the quarter-finals at the 1991 World Championships in Barcelona and was then defeated by the Frenchman Bruno Carabetta . At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, ​​he lost his opening match against the Irish Ciarán Ward by referee decision (yusei-gachi).

In 1993 Korhonen retired early from the European and World Championships. After that he hardly took part in international tournaments.

Marko's brother Jorma Korhonen also competed in the 1992 Olympic Games, a weight class above Marko.
