European Judo Championships 1992

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1992 European Judo Championships took place in Paris from May 4th to 7th . The last European championships were held in Paris five years earlier. The team from the host country led the medal table.

In 1992 a team started for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), before the successor states of the Soviet Union participated individually from 1993 onwards. The Baltic states competed with their own teams as early as 1992. The Latvian Vsevolods Zeļonijs was the first European championship medalist for his country.

Not quite three months after the European Championships in Paris, the Olympic Games in Barcelona hosted the first ever women's Olympic tournament. Cécile Nowak won the super lightweight in Paris for the fourth time in a row at the European Championships and then became the first Olympic champion in her weight class in Barcelona. Laetitia Meignan won the light heavyweight division for the second time in a row, winning a bronze medal in Barcelona behind a South Korean and a Japanese.
