Yolanda Soler

Yolanda Soler Grajera (born January 9, 1971 in Madrid ) is a former Spanish judoka . She won an Olympic bronze medal in 1996.

Athletic career

The 1.50 m tall Yolanda Soler fought in the super light weight. In 1990, 1992 and from 1994 to 1996 she was Spanish champion.

Soler took fifth place at the Junior European Championships in 1986. In February 1991 she won her first World Cup tournament in Munich. At the European Championships in 1991 she lost to the British Karen Briggs in the quarter-finals , but fought her way to bronze with three wins in the hope round . In 1992 she reached the final at the European Championships in Paris, but lost to the French Cécile Nowak . At the Olympic premiere of women's judo in Barcelona in 1992, Soler lost to Karen Briggs in the quarter-finals. In the hope round she defeated the Canadian Brigitte Lastrade and lost to the Cuban Amarilis Savón , in the end Soler took seventh place.

At the 1993 World Championships she won four fights and lost twice, finishing in fifth place. In 1994 Soler won her first European title by defeating Frenchwoman Sylvie Meloux . In 1995 she defended her title, Meloux losing again in the final. In 1996 Soler won her third title in a row by beating the German Jana Perlberg in the final . At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Soler won her first three fights and then lost in the semifinals to the North Korean Kye Sun-hui . With a victory over the Algerian Salima Souakri , Soler won a bronze medal. Yolanda Soler won her last international individual medal at the European Championships in Oviedo in 1998 , when she won bronze again.
