Nicole Flagothier

Nicole Josiane Ghislaine Flagothier (born January 9, 1966 in Rocourt, today Liège ) is a former Belgian judoka . She was world championship runner-up in 1991 in the lightweight.

Athletic career

The 1.54 m tall Nicole Flagothier fought until 1995 in the lightweight, the weight class up to 56 kilograms. In 1986 she was lightweight and Belgian champion from 1988 to 1993. In 1987 she reached fifth place at the European Championships. In 1989 she finished seventh at both the European Championships and the World Championships . In 1990 she won a bronze medal at the European Championships. At the 1991 World Championships in Barcelona she defeated the Japanese Chiyori Tateno , the German Gudrun Hausch and the French Catherine Arnaud on her way to the final . In the final she was defeated by the Spaniard Miriam Blasco and received the silver medal. In 1992 she also received silver after her defeat by Nicola Fairbrother in the European Championship final . At the Olympic premiere of women's judo in Barcelona in 1992, she was defeated in the semifinals by Nicola Fairbrother and in the fight for a bronze medal from the Japanese Chiyori Tateno. In 1993 she won bronze again at the European Championships.

In 1996 and 1997 Nicole Flagothier won the Belgian championship title in the semi-light weight category up to 52 kilograms. In this weight class, she won a bronze medal at the European Championships in 1996. At the 1997 World Championships , she also won bronze after her semi-final defeat against North Korean Kye Sun-hui . Flagothier remained active for a few years, but won no more international medals. After her career, she became a coach, including coaching Belgian women for many years.
