Begoña Gomez

Begoña Gómez Martín (born November 23, 1964 in Madrid ) is a former Spanish judoka . She was European champion in 1990 and won the European championship silver in 1988 and the European championship bronze in 1992.

Athletic career

Begoña Gómez fought in the light middleweight division, the weight class up to 61 kilograms. She won six Spanish championship titles (1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1990 and 1992) and was second five times (1980, 1982, 1983, 1989 and 1994).

In 1984 she took part in the World Championships in Vienna , but was eliminated in the round of 32 against the Swiss Isabelle Weidmann . In 1985 she finished seventh at the European Championships in Landskrona . In 1986 she was eliminated from the European Championships in the round of 16 and from the World Championships in the quarter-finals. At the 1987 World Championships, she lost in the first round to the French Martine Rottier . In 1988 she reached the final at the European Championships in Pamplona and won the silver medal behind the British Diane Bell .

In 1989 Begoña Gómez won the World Cup in Sofia. At the World Championships in Belgrade in 1989 , she finished seventh. In 1990 at the European Championships in Frankfurt am Main she reached the final with a victory over the Dutchwoman Jenny Gal , in the final she defeated Diane Bell. In 1991 she was eliminated from the first round of the World Championships in Barcelona against the Cuban Ileana Beltrán . In May 1992 Gómez lost to the German Frauke Eickhoff in the semifinals of the European Championships in Paris , and she won the battle for bronze against Yael Arad from Israel. At the end of July, competitions in the Fauenjudo were on the official program for the first time at the Olympic Games in Barcelona . In the first round, Gómez defeated the Japanese Takako Kobayashi with a small score (yuko). In the last sixteen she was defeated by Yael Arad with a great score (waza-ari). In the hope round she defeated Miroslava Jánošíková from Czechoslovakia with a yuko rating. After an Ippon defeat against Jelena Petrowa , who competed for the United Team , Begoña Gómez took seventh place.

Begoña Gómez is married to the judoka Carlos Sotillo .
