Giorgio Vismara

Giorgio Vismara (born January 11, 1965 in Milan ) is a former Italian judoka . He won a bronze medal at world championships and a silver and two bronze medals at European championships.

Athletic career

From 1984 to 1988 Vismara fought in the weight class up to 78 kilograms. In 1984 he was third in the European Junior Championships. In 1985 he was seventh at the World Championships in Seoul . Two months later he was defeated in the final of the European Junior Championships to the French Pascal Tayot . In 1986, the member of the Carabinieri finished second at the World Military Championships and third at the Goodwill Games . In 1987 Vismara won bronze at the Mediterranean Games .

From 1989 to 1995 Vismara fought in the weight class up to 86 kilograms. At the European Championships in Helsinki he was defeated in the semifinals by Vitali Budjukin from the Soviet Union, with a victory against the Belgian Luc Suplis, Vismara won a bronze medal. At the World Championships in Belgrade, Vismara was eliminated in the round of hope after losing to the British Densign White . In 1990 Vismara finished seventh at the European Championships in Frankfurt am Main . A year later he reached the final at the European Championships in Prague with a semi-final victory against the Spaniard León Villar , he received the silver medal behind the German Axel Lobenstein . Two months later, the 1991 World Championships took place in Barcelona . Vismara lost to Joseph Wanag from the United States in the round of 16 . With four wins in the hopes Vismara fought his way to the bronze medal. At the European Championships in Paris in 1992 , Vismara lost his opening match against Pascal Tayot. After four wins in the Hope Round, he received another bronze medal. Three weeks after the European Championships, Vismara won the Military World Championships. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona Vismara lost to Axel Lobenstein in the round of 16 and then retired in the hoping round against León Villar. Vismara's greatest success in the following years was winning the first military world games in 1995 in Ostia.

Giorgio Vismara married the Dutch judoka Jenny Gal , who then competed for Italy from 1999.
