Philippe Pradayrol

Philippe Pradayrol (born June 16, 1966 in Avignon , † December 8, 1993 in the Bouches-du-Rhône department ) was a French judoka . He was European champion in 1990 and 1991.

Athletic career

The 1.70 m tall Philippe Pradayrol fought in the super lightweight, the weight class up to 66 kilograms. In 1986 he was junior European champion, the following year he was third in the military world championships. In 1988 he won the Tournoi de Paris . In 1988 and 1989 he was French champion. At the European Championships in Helsinki in 1989 , he defeated the Hungarian József Wagner in the quarter-finals . After his semi-final defeat by Amiran Totikashvili from the Soviet Union, he defeated the Israeli Shuki Koaz in the battle for a bronze medal . Two months later, Pradayrol won a bronze medal at the World Military Championships. In October 1989 he was eliminated from the World Championships in Belgrade in the round of 16 against the Italian Marino Cattedra .

In 1990 he lost to the Japanese Hitoshi Noguchi in the final of the Tournoi de Paris . At the European Championships in 1990 in Frankfurt am Main, he defeated the Swiss Serge Noble in the quarter-finals and the German Richard Trautmann in the semi-finals . Pradayrol won his first European title against the Briton Nigel Donohue . A year later at the European Championships in Prague in 1991 he won the semifinals against Ruslan Gamsatow from the Soviet Union and in the final against Poland's Piotr Kamrowski . At the 1991 World Championships in Barcelona he defeated Manfred Hiptmaier from Austria in the quarterfinals . After his semi-final defeat by South Korean Yoon Hyun , Pradayrol won the battle for bronze against Chinese Chen Cailiang .

In 1992 he lost to the Italian Girolamo Giovinazzo in the final of the Tournoi de Paris . At the European Championships in Paris in 1992 he defeated the Spaniard Carlos Sotillo in the quarterfinals and Nigel Donohue in the semifinals. He lost the final against Nazim Hüseynov, who was standing for the Commonwealth of Independent States . Three months later the Olympic judo tournament took place in Barcelona . Pradayrol won his first three fights and then lost to Richard Trautmann in the quarterfinals. In the hope round, he defeated the Canadian Ewan Beaton and the Venezuelan Willis Garcia , he lost the battle for bronze to the Japanese Tadanori Koshino . Pradayrol achieved three of his five wins prematurely through Ippon, both defeats were also through Ippon. In 1993 Pradayrol finished seventh at the World Championships in Hamilton. On December 5, 1993, he finished third at the French championships in light weight. He died in a traffic accident three days later.
