Magali Baton

Magali Baton (born March 12, 1971 in Saint-Chamond ) is a former French judoka . She was third in the 1997 World Championships, second in 1999 at European Championships and four times bronze medalist.

Athletic career

The 1.67 m tall Magali Baton competed in the lightweight, the weight class up to 56 kilograms, from 1998 to 57 kilograms. In 1993 she won her first World Cup tournament in Leonding. At the European Championships in 1994 she beat Anita Kubica from Poland in the quarter-finals and lost in the semifinals to Jessica Gal from the Netherlands . In the battle for a bronze medal, she defeated the Portuguese Filipa Cavalleri . In 1995 Baton won a bronze medal at the Universiade in Fukuoka. In 1996 at the European Championships in The Hague, she lost her opening match against Jessica Gal. In the round of hope she defeated the Ukrainian Alla Klimovich and the British Nicola Fairbrother , and won the battle for bronze against Zülfiyyə Hüseynova from Azerbaijan. At the Olympic Games in Atlanta, she lost in her first fight by referee decision against the later Olympic champion Driulis González . In the hope round she defeated Jessica Gal after 49 seconds and then lost to Nicola Fairbrother through Waza-ari. At the end of 1996 Baton was second at the World Student Championships behind the Spaniard Isabel Fernández .

At the European Championships in 1997 in Ostend Baton won the quarterfinals against Zülfiyyə Hüseynova. After her semi-final defeat against Belgian Marisabel Lomba , she won bronze by defeating Jessica Gal. Five months later at the 1997 World Championships in Paris, she lost to Driulis González in the quarterfinals. With victories over the North Korean Ae Yang-sun , the Swede Pernilla Andersson and Marisabel Lomba, Baton fought his way to the bronze medal. In 1998 the European Championships took place in Oviedo. Baton lost in the semifinals to Britain's Deborah Allen and won bronze against Zülfiyyə Hüseynova. In the following year at the European Championships in Bratislava in 1999 she beat Marisabel Lomba in the round of 16, the German Antje Lehmann in the quarter-finals and the Swiss Lena Göldi in the semifinals. She lost the final to Isabel Fernández. At the 1999 World Championships, she lost to the Czech Michaela Vernerová in the round of 16 and ended up in seventh place. In the 2000 Olympic year, Magali Baton won the World Cup tournament in Paris, where she defeated Isabel Fernández in the final. In 2001 she won her only French championship against Barbara Harel . Their last major tournament was the 2001 World Championships in Munich. In the second round, she defeated the Australian Maria Pekli . Then she lost the quarter-finals against the Dutchwoman Deborah Gravenstijn and was eliminated in the hope round against the Italian Cinzia Cavazzuti .
