Michaela Vernerová

Michaela Vernerová (born September 15, 1973 in Slaný ) is a former Czech judoka . She was third in the 1999 World Cup and second in 1997.

Athletic career

The 1.67 m tall Michaela Vernerová fought until 1997 in the light middleweight division, the weight class up to 61 kilograms. In 1990 she won a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships , still starting for Czechoslovakia . In 1991 she finished fifth at the Junior European Championships. At the European Championships in 1993 she appeared for the first time for the now independent Czech Republic, but was eliminated in the first round against the British Diane Bell . At the 1993 World Championships, she lost to the South Korean Jung Sung-sook in the second round . In 1994 she lost her opening match at the European Championships in GdanskBirgit Blum from Liechtenstein.

In 1995 Vernerová reached the semi-finals at the European Championships in Birmingham , but finished only fifth after defeats to Jenny Gal from the Netherlands and Catherine Fleury-Vachon from France. At the World Championships in Chiba , she defeated the Japanese Yuko Emoto , but then dropped out against Yael Arad from Israel. In 1996 she lost to the Belgian Gella Vandecaveye in the quarter-finals at the European Championships in The Hague and then dropped out in the hope round. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , she lost her opening match after 1:43 minutes against the Venezuelan Xiomara Griffith . Michaela Vernerová won her first medal at international championships in the adult class at the 1997 European championships in Ostend . She reached the final with a victory over the Polish Irena Tokarz , in the final she was defeated by Gella Vandecaveye. At the World Championships in Paris , she failed in the first round against the Ukrainian Alla Klimovich .

After the reorganization of the weight classes, Vernerová fought from 1998 in the lightweight, the weight class up to 57 kilograms. In 1998 she finished seventh at the European Championships in Oviedo . At the end of 1998 she reached the final at the World Student Championships in Prague and won silver behind Sulphija Hüsejnowa from Azerbaijan. In January 1999, she finished third in the Fukuoka Cup . At the European Championships in Bratislava she lost to the Spanish Isabel Fernández in the semi-finals , with a victory over the Ukrainian Ivana Remitska she won a bronze medal. A month and a half later she won silver at the Universiade in Palma de Mallorca behind the Cuban Driulis González . The 1999 World Championships took place in Birmingham three months later . Michaela Vernerová lost to Driulis González in the semifinals, but won the battle for a bronze medal against Sulfija Hüsejnowa.

In May 2000 at the European Championships in Wroclaw she lost in the semifinals to the Swede Pernilla Andersson , with a victory over the British Jennifer Brien Vernerová won a bronze medal. At the Olympic Games in Sydney she was eliminated in the opening fight against the Italian Cinzia Cavazzuti . In 2000 Vernerová also won her only Czech championship title. At the end of the year she took third place at the world championships for students. In early 2001 she reached the finals at the Tournoi de Paris and was then defeated by the Japanese Kie Kusakabe . At the European Championships in Paris she was defeated in the battle for bronze Cinzia Cavazzuti. In September 2001 she won bronze again at the Universiade in Beijing .
