Jung Sung-sook (born January 26, 1972 ) is a former South Korean judoka . She won two Olympic medals and was light middleweight world champion in 1995.
Career
The 1.65 m tall Jung Sung-sook took seventh place at the 1993 World Championships . In the same year she won her first title at the Asian Championships. In 1994 she first won the Goodwill Games . At the Asian Games in 1994 she defeated the Japanese Yuko Emoto in the final . At the end of 1994 she also won the title at the world championships for students. In 1995 she won the Paris World Cup. In the summer she won the Universiade in Fukuoka. One month after the Universiade, the World Championships took place in Chiba, also in Japan. Jung Song-sook won in the semi-finals against the French Catherine Fleury-Vachon and in the final against the Dutch Jennifer Gal . Two months after the World Championships, the South Korean won her second Asian title in New Delhi. In the summer of 1996 she lost to the Belgian Gella Vandecaveye in the semifinals of the Atlanta Olympics , and in the battle for a bronze medal she defeated the Israeli Yael Arad . At the end of 1996 Jung Sung-sook won the Asian Championships for the third time.
At the 1997 World Championships in Paris, Jung lost to the Spaniard Sara Álvarez in the quarter-finals . The South Korean won a bronze medal by winning the hope round over Irena Tokarz from Poland , Hiroko Kitazume from Japan and Lara Sullivan from Australia . At the end of 1997 she won her fourth title at the Asian Championships in Manila. In 1998 she won a bronze medal at the 1998 Asian Games . After a year break, she returned in 2000 and won the season opener at the Paris tournament. In May she won her fifth Asian championship in Osaka. In September, Jung lost to French Séverine Vandenhende in the first round at the Olympic Games in Atlanta after 3:02 minutes by Ippon. With three wins in the hope round, the Korean reached the battle for the bronze medal against Jennifer Gal, who is now competing for Italy. After victory by yusei-gachi (judge's decision), Jung Sung-sook received her second Olympic bronze medal.
