Gévrise Émane (born July 27, 1982 in Yaoundé , Cameroon ) is a former French judoka . She won an Olympic bronze medal and was three times world and five times European champion.

The 1.62 m tall judoka competed in the middleweight division until 2009, then fought in the light middleweight division from 2009 to 2013 and returned to the middleweight division in 2014.

Athletic career

In 2003 Gévrise Émane won the Universiade . In the same year she won the first of four French championship titles. At the end of 2004 she won the silver medal at the U23 European Championships and shortly afterwards also silver at the World Student Championships. In March 2005 she won her first world cup tournament in Rotterdam. At the 2005 World Championships she reached the final and received the silver medal behind Edith Bosch from the Netherlands . In May 2006 she defeated Bosch in the semi-finals of the European Championships, in the final she defeated the German Heide Wollert . In 2007 she defended her European title, again she won against Bosch in the semifinals and in the final she defeated Katarzyna Kłys from Poland . At the 2007 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro , she defeated Ronda Rousey from the United States in the final . After a semi-final defeat against Ylenia Scapin from Italy, she won a bronze medal at the European Championships in 2008 . At the Olympic Games in Beijing, she lost her first fight to the Spanish Leire Iglesias and was eliminated. At the French championships in 2009, she lost to Lucie Décosse , who dominated the middleweight division in France for the next few years.

Émanes first success after changing the weight class was the victory at the Grand Slam tournament in Paris in early 2010. In 2011, she won the European Championships by beating the Dutch Anicka van Emden in the final . At the World Championships in Paris , she won the final against the Japanese Yoshie Ueno . She fought her next title at the European Championships in 2012 , when she defeated Yarden Gerbi from Israel in the final . At the 2012 Olympic Games in London she lost to the Mongolian Tsedewsürengiin Mönchdsajaa in the quarter-finals , with wins in the hope round over Alice Schlesinger from Israel and over the South Korean Joung Da-woon, Émane won the bronze medal. At the 2013 World Championships, she lost to her compatriot Clarisse Agbegnenou in the semifinals , but defeated the Slovenian Tina Trstenjak in the battle for bronze .

Gévrise Émane returned to the middleweight division after Lucie Décosse ended her career and Clarisse Agbegnenou dominated the light middleweight division. In 2014 Émane won some international tournaments but no international championship medals. That changed in 2015 when she defeated the Spanish María Bernabéu in the final at the World Championships in Astana . At the European Championships in 2016 she won the final against the Georgian Esther Stam . In the quarter-finals of the European Championships in 2016, she defeated the British Sally Conway , in the opening fight at the 2016 Olympic Games , Émane was eliminated by Conway. Shortly thereafter, Gévrise Émane ended her career.
