Sophie Deicha

Sophie Deicha (* 1955 in France ) is a French Christian Orthodox theologian, one of the first female professors at the Institut de Théologie Orthodoxe Saint-Serge in Paris and an important figure in interdenominational dialogue. For many years she was a member of the World Council of Churches ' Faith and Order Commission . She was the representative of the Patriarchate of Constantinople .

Life

Deicha comes from an Orthodox family of Russian descent. After studying Slavic philology and theology, she worked as a catechist in Paris.

Deicha was Orthodox representative at the European Ecumenical Assembly (CEC and CCEE) in Basel in 1989, at CEC in Prague in 1992 and at the World Council of Churches in 1993 in Santiago de Compostela and Harare in 1998.

academic career

From 1988 Sophie Deicha was the first woman to teach orthodox hagiology in France.

Historical and linguistic subjects were also taught by her; she was one of the first to introduce new teaching methods at the St. Sergius Institute, such as audiovisual methods and computer-based teaching. She was involved in the development of distance theological courses.

Her publications are also frequently used in Germany by theology professors of the younger generations. On the occasion of the millennium of the baptism of the Rus' a script was published that has been regularly reissued for over thirty years and has become a standard work.

Contributions to theology

Since 1980 Sophie Deicha has endeavored to bring some aspects of Orthodox holiness closer to the Western audience. In this context, she also dealt with some historical personalities, although these were not yet in the list of saints at the time. So Siluan from Mount Athos, mother Maria Skobtsowa, and Bishop Nikolaj Velimirovic. Sophie Deicha is the author of a dozen works, some of them in collaboration with specialists from other denominations.

Her college textbooks have been in use for several decades. In the Hagiology Course Volume 1 , the saints of today are dealt with first and then back to the time of the apostles. A second teaching aid, also divided into two-hour lessons, deals with Orthodox holiness in the North Pacific ( Hagiology Course Volume 2 ).

Books for religious instruction aimed at children She wrote children's books for religious instruction: the German-language booklet Icons of Orthodox Solemnities was also translated into Russian, Greek and Serbian.

Her academic work covers various areas: in German: Ecumenical Review , in English: women's voices and church visions , in French: the life and work of Georges Peskoff , The Return of the Angels and Constantinople at the Gates of Europe .
