María Bernabéu
María Bernabéu Avomo (born February 15, 1988 in Salamanca ) is a Spanish judoka . She was World Cup second in 2015 and World Cup third in 2017.
Athletic career
The 1.70 m tall María Bernabéu fights in the middleweight division, the weight class up to 70 kilograms. She won the Spanish championship title in 2008, from 2010 to 2013 and from 2015 to 2018.
Bernabéu began her international career with a seventh place in the 2004 European Cadet Championships. In 2006 she was third in the U20 European Championships. In 2007 she finished fifth at the U23 European Championships, in 2008 she was seventh and 2010 third. In 2011 she won her first World Cup in Rome. In the same year she took part for the first time in the world championships in the adult class, but retired in her opening fight against the Japanese Haruka Tachimoto . In 2012 she finished seventh at the European Championships .
In April 2013 she was eliminated from the round of 16 of the European Championships against the Croatian Barbara Matić . At the Mediterranean Games in Mersin in 2013 , Bernabéu reached the final and was defeated by the French Fanny Posvite . At the 2013 World Championships , she retired after two victories in the round of 16 against Angolan Antónia Moreira . In 2014 she reached the semi-finals at the European Championships in Montpellier . After defeats against the Dutchwoman Kim Polling and against Barbara Matić, she finished fifth. Four months later, she was eliminated from the 2014 World Championships in her opening match against Katarzyna Kłys from Poland .
Bernabéu also retired early at the 2015 European Games . At the 2015 World Championships in Astana, she defeated Kim Polling in the quarterfinals and the Austrian Bernadette Graf in the semifinals . In the final she was defeated by the French Gévrise Émane . In 2016 she took seventh place at the European Championships in Kazan . Two weeks later she won the Grand Slam in Baku with a final victory over the Brazilian Maria Portela . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she defeated Katarzyna Kłys in her opening fight and lost to the Colombian Yuri Alvear in the quarterfinals . In the hope round , she defeated the Israeli Linda Bolder , the battle for a bronze medal she lost to the German Laura Vargas Koch .
In 2017, Bernabéu lost to Yuri Alvear in the quarterfinals of the World Championships in Budapest . With victories over Maria Portela and the Moroccan Assmaa Niang, the Spaniard won a bronze medal. At the European Championships in Tel Aviv in 2018 , she lost in the quarter-finals to Barbara Matić and finished fifth after another defeat against the British Gemma Howell . At the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona in 2018 , she defeated the Italian Carola Paissoni in the final . Three months later, she was eliminated in the second round of the World Championships in Baku against Canadian Kelita Zupancic . In 2019, as in 2015, the European Championships were held as part of the European Games , Bernabéu was eliminated in 2019 in their opening fight against Carola Paissoni. At the World Championships in Tokyo she lost in the round of 16 against the Austrian Michaela Polleres .
