Séverine Vandenhende

Séverine Anne-Marie Vandenhende (born January 12, 1974 in Dechy ) is a former French judoka . She was light middleweight world champion in 1997 and Olympic champion in 2000.

Athletic career

The 1.70 m tall Séverine Vandenhende was third in the Junior World Championships in 1992 and second in the Junior European Championships. In 1994 and 1995 she was French champion. In 1994 she was part of the team that won the silver medal at the European Team Championships. At the student world championships in 1994 she received a bronze medal. In 1995 she reached the finals at the Universiade and won silver behind the South Korean Jung Sung-sook . In 1996 she was European team champion and student world champion. At the European Championships in 1997, she lost to the Polish Irena Tokarz in the quarterfinals, after her victory over the Italian Maddalena Sorrentino she received the bronze medal. At the 1997 World Championships in Paris , she defeated the Spanish Sara Álvarez in the semifinals and the Belgian Gella Vandecaveye in the final .

In 1998 the French team won silver at the World Team Championships. After a year without an international placement, Séverine Vandenhende won the silver medal behind Gella Vandecaveye at the European Championships in 2000. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, the French won the semifinals against the German Anja von Rekowski after 3:49 minutes, in the final she defeated the Chinese Li Shufang with a small score.

Séverine Vandenhende was internationally active until 2003. Then she was first a coach at her home club Red Star Champigny , and later she took over the French national team.
