Sara Álvarez

Sara Yaneisy Álvarez Menéndez (born July 10, 1975 in Madrid ) is a former Spanish judoka . She won two medals at world championships and was European champion in 2003 and 2004.

Athletic career

The 1.64 m tall Sara Álvarez fought in the light middleweight division. She was Spanish champion in 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

In 1992 Álvarez won a bronze medal at the European Junior Championships, in 1993 she won the title. In 1994 she received a bronze medal at the World Student Championships. In 1996 she finished fifth at the European Championships in The Hague after losing the battle for bronze to British Diane Bell . At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, she defeated Diane Bell in the second round and lost to the Dutch Jenny Gal in the quarter-finals . In the hope round she defeated the Cuban Ileana Beltrán and then lost to the Israeli Yael Arad after 45 seconds. Ultimately, Álvarez took seventh place.

In 1997 she lost at the European Championships in Ostend in the hoping round against the French Séverine Vandenhende and finished in seventh place. A month after the European Championships, Álvarez won the final of the Mediterranean Games against the French Karine Petit . Four months later at the World Championships in Paris Álvarez lost in the semifinals to Séverine Vandenhende. With a victory over the Canadian Michelle Buckingham, the Spaniard won a bronze medal. The 1998 European Championships took place in Oviedo. In front of the Spanish crowd, Sara Álvarez defeated Vandenhende in the quarter-finals and Rusin Jelena Petrowa in the semi-finals . Álvarez received silver after losing to Belgian Gella Vandecaveye in the final . In 1999 she was defeated by Jenny Gal, now starting for Italy, at the European Championships in Bratislava. In the battle for bronze she defeated the Dutch girl Daniëlle Vriezema . Four and a half months later at the World Championships in Birmingham she was defeated by Gella Vandecaveye in the semifinals, and won the battle for bronze against Celita Schutz from the United States. At the European Championships in 2000 in Wroclaw Álvarez lost in the quarter-finals against Vriezema. After two wins in the Hope Round, she won the battle for bronze against Jenny Gal. The 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney ended for Álvarez in her first fight, after 3:36 minutes she lost to the Brazilian Vania Ishii .

In 2001 Sara Álvarez finished fifth at the European Championships in Paris after losing to Claudia Heill from Austria in the quarter-finals and Ylenia Scapin from Italy in the battle for bronze. Two months later she defeated the Japanese Ayumi Tanimoto in the quarter-finals and the Cuban Anaysi Hernández at the World Championships in Munich . In the final she lost to the Belgian Vandecaveye. At the European Championships in Maribor in 2002 , Sara Álvarez lost her opening match against Daniëlle Vriezema. At the end of 2002 she won the World Masters tournament in Bucharest. In 2003 at the European Championships in Düsseldorf, she defeated Claudia Heill in the quarter-finals, the British Karen Roberts in the semi-finals and Gella Vandecaveye in the final. At the World Championships in Osaka, she was eliminated in the first fight against Claudia Heill. Sara Álvarez won her second European title at the 2004 European Championships in Bucharest after beating Germany's Claudia Malzahn in the quarter-finals, over Ylenia Scapin in the semi-finals and over Poland's Aneta Szczepańska in the final. The 2004 Olympic Games in Athens were over for Sara Álvarez after 2:26 minutes against Frenchwoman Lucie Décosse .

In 2005 Décosse and Álvarez met again in the final of the Mediterranean Games and the French also won here. In 2006 and 2007 Sara Álvarez finished fifth twice at the European Championships.
