Aneta Szczepańska
Aneta Maria Szczepańska (born June 20, 1974 in Włocławek ) is a former Polish judoka . She won an Olympic silver medal in 1996.
Athletic career
The 1.70 m tall Szczepańska won eleven Polish championship titles between 1993 and 2008, nine of them in the light middleweight division and two in the middleweight division. She won her first international medal in 1994 when she won bronze at the European Team Championships with the Polish team. After she was only second behind Irena Tokarz at the Polish Light Middleweight Championships in 1995 , she entered the middleweight division at the 1995 World Championships in Chiba. After three wins at the start, she lost in the semifinals against the Cuban Odalis Revé , the battle for bronze won Szczepańska against the French Alice Dubois . Two weeks later, the Polish women won silver at the European team championships.
At the 1996 Olympic Games , Aneta Szczepańska also competed in the middleweight division. After two Ippon victories over Melanie Engoang from Gabon and the British Rowena Sweatman , Szczepańska met Alice Dubois in the semifinals, and after four seconds of fighting the Polish reached the final. Here she met the South Korean Cho Min-sun , after eighteen seconds the South Korean was Olympic champion. At the European team championships in 1996, the French women won ahead of the Polish women.
In the later years of her career, Aneta Szczepańska rarely achieved international success. In 2000 she was second in the World Military Middleweight Championships behind the Slovenian Raša Sraka . At the European Championships in 2004 she reached the final in the light middleweight division and lost to the Spaniard Sara Álvarez . In 2006 and 2007 she took third place twice in a world cup tournament in Bucharest and Prague.
