Birgit Blum

Birgit "Biggi" Blum (born January 7, 1968 ) is a former Liechtenstein judoka .

Athletic career

Blum usually started in the light middleweight division, the weight class up to 61 kilograms. In 1983 she was second in the Swiss championships in this weight class. From 1990 to 1992 she took third place. In 1984 she took part in the Judo World Championships for the first time and won her first fight against Donna Guy from New Zealand, but then dropped out in the round of 16. In 1985 she took third place at the international tournament in Leonding.

At the Olympic premiere of women's judo in Barcelona in 1992 , Blum won her first fight against Lynn Roethke from the United States. In the last sixteen she was defeated by Miroslava Jánošíková from Czechoslovakia. At the European Championships in 1994, Blum won her first two fights, but then lost twice and finished ninth. In 1996 she reached the finals at the World Cup in Leonding, where she was defeated by the South Korean Jung Sung-sook . At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , she formed the Liechtenstein Olympic team together with athlete Manuela Marxer . Blum carried the flag at the opening ceremony. In the Olympic tournament, she lost to Israeli Yael Arad in her first fight .

At Swiss championships, Blum also started in the middleweight division, the weight class up to 66 kilograms. In this weight class she was Swiss champion in 1994, 1995 and 1996. Birgit Blum was Liechtenstein's Sportswoman of the Year from 1985 to 1988 and again in 1996 .
