Marie Isabelle Françoise Lomba , or Marisabel Lomba or Marisabelle Lomba for short , (born August 17, 1974 in Charleroi ) is a former Belgian judoka . She was Olympic third in 1996 and European champion in 1997.

Athletic career

The 1.65 m tall Marisabel Lomba mostly started in the lightweight. In this weight class she was Belgian champion in 1994, 1995, 1997, 2001 and 2002.

In 1992 Lomba was fifth at the European Junior Championships. In 1994 she took third place at the European Team Championships with the Belgian team. At the 1995 World Championships in Chiba, she defeated the Spanish Isabel Fernández , the Dutch Jessica Gal and the Hungarian Maria Pekli in her first three fights . In the semifinals she was defeated by the Cuban Driulis González and in the battle for the bronze medal by the Portuguese Filipa Cavalleri , in the end she was fifth. At the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996 , Lomba lost her first fight against the South Korean Jung Sun-yong , with victories in the hope round over the Japanese Noriko Mizoguchi , Zülfiyyə Hüseynova from Azerbaijan and the Chinese Liu Chuang , Lomba fought her way to the bronze medal.

In 1997, Lomba defeated the Spanish Isabel Fernández in the final of the European Championships in front of a home crowd in Ostend. At the World Championships in Paris , she lost to the Spaniard in the semifinals and lost to French Magali Baton in the battle for bronze . At the European Team Championships in 1997 the Belgians won silver. After winning bronze at the 1998 World Team Championships, the Belgians were European Team Champions in 1999. In 2000 Lomba defeated Isabel Fernández in the round of 16 of the European Championships, but only finished seventh in the end. At the Olympic Games in Sydney she won her two opening fights, but then lost to the Cuban Driulis González in the quarterfinals. After losing to Frenchwoman Barbara Harel in the hope round, Lomba finished ninth. At the end of 2000 Lomba won bronze again at the European Team Championships, in 2001 the Belgian team won. Lomba ended her career in 2004.
