Julian Davies (Judoka)

Julian Davies (born March 16, 1971 in Salisbury ) is a former British judoka . He was European Championship runner-up in 1996 and European Championship third place in 1997.

Athletic career

The 1.73 m tall Julian Davies fought until 1992 in the super lightweight, the weight class up to 60 kilograms. In 1991 he won a bronze medal at the European Junior Championships.

In 1993 he switched to half-light weight, the weight class up to 65 kilograms. In 1994 he finished seventh at the European Championships in Gdansk . In early 1996, he took third place at the Tournoi de Paris . At the European Championships in The Hague in 1996 , he defeated the Russian Islam Mazijew in the semifinals . In the final he was defeated by the Georgian Giorgi Rewazishvili . Two months after the European Championships, the Olympic judo tournament took place in Atlanta . Davies defeated Abdoul Karim Seck from Senegal in his first fight . In the last sixteen he was eliminated against Poland's Jarosław Lewak .

At the European Championships in 1997 in Ostend Davies was defeated in the second round to the Turkish Hüseyin Özkan . With two wins in the hopes he reached the battle for a bronze medal, which he won against the Swede Gabriel Bengtsson . At the 1997 World Championships , Davies won his first three fights and lost in the quarterfinals to South Korean Kim Hyuk . In the hope round he was eliminated against the Brazilian Henrique Guimarães .
