Henrique Carlos Serra Azul Guimarães (born September 9, 1972 in São Paulo ) is a former Brazilian judoka . He was Olympic Knight in 1996.

Athletic career

The 1.72 m tall Guimarães fought at half light weight. In 1992 he was second at the Junior World Championships. In 1994 he won a bronze medal at the World Military Championships. At the Pan American Championships in 1994 he won the silver medal behind the Cuban Israel Hernández . In 1995 Guimarães won a bronze medal at the Pan American Games . At the World Championships in Chiba , he reached seventh place. The following year he was defeated by the Hungarian József Csák in the quarter-finals of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , and Guimarães fought his way to the bronze medal with three wins in the round of hope. Three months after the Olympics, he lost the final at the Pan American Championships against Israel Hernández.

In August 1997 Guimarães won the final of the South American Championships against Ludwig Ortiz from Venezuela. A week later, the Brazilian won bronze at the Pan American Championships. At the 1997 World Championships , he reached seventh place. In 1998 he won second place with the Brazilian team at the World Team Championships. In 1999 Guimarães won the final of the Pan American Championships against Alex Ottiano from the United States. In 2000 he won the South American Championships by beating Chilean Luis Fibla in the final . At the Olympic Games in Sydney he finished ninth after defeats against the Italian Girolamo Giovinazzo and the Georgi Wasagaschwilli from Georgia .

In 2002 Guimarães lost to the Cuban Yordanis Arencibia in the final of the Pan American Championships . In 2003 he won the final against Juan Carlos Jacinto from the Dominican Republic. At the Pan American Games in 2003 he lost in the semifinals to Arencibia, in the battle for the bronze medal he defeated Jacinto. At the end of his career Guimarães was eliminated in the round of 16 of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens against the Russian Magomed Jafarow .
