Israel Hernández

Israel Hernández Planas (born January 7, 1970 in Santiago de Cuba ) is a former Cuban judoka . He won two Olympic bronze medals.

Athletic career

Hernandez began his career in the super light weight up to 60 kilograms. In 1990 he won the silver medal in this weight class at the Junior World Championships. In the same year he won the Pan American Championships. At the 1991 Judo World Championships in Barcelona he lost to the South Korean Yoon Hyun in the quarter-finals , and he lost the battle for bronze to Nazim Hüseynov from the Soviet Union.

At the Pan American Games in 1991 , a month after the World Championships, he won a bronze medal in the half-light weight up to 65 kilograms. In 1992 he won the silver medal behind the US judoka Jimmy Pedro at the Pan American Championships . At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, ​​Hernández lost in the semifinals against the Hungarian József Csák , in the battle for bronze he defeated the Spaniard Francisco Lorenzo .

In 1994 Hernández won the Pan American Championships. The following year he won the title at the Pan American Games . At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, the Cuban lost to the German Udo Quellmalz in the round of 16 . With three wins in the round of hope he reached the battle for bronze, which he won against József Csák. In 1996 and 1997 Hernandez won the Pan American Championships.
