Islam Khamsatowitsch Maziev

Islam Chamsatowitsch Mazijew ( Russian Ислам Хамзатович Мациев ; born December 10, 1973 in Grozny ) is a former judoka who competed for Russia . He was runner-up at the 1998 European Championships.

Athletic career

The 1.68 m tall Islam Maziyev fought in the half-light weight, the weight class up to 65 kilograms, from 1998 to 66 kilograms. In 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1999 he was the Russian champion in this weight class. In 1996 he won the World Cup tournaments in Moscow and Leonding. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta he lost his first fight after 22 seconds to the Japanese Yukimasa Nakamura , in the hope round he was eliminated after 3:58 minutes against the Mongolian Pürewdordschiin Njamlchagwa .

In 1998 he again won the tournament in Moscow. At the European Championships in Oviedo he defeated the British David Somerville in the semifinals , in the final he was defeated by the French Larbi Benboudaoud . Also in 1999 Maziev won the World Cup in Moscow. At the World Championships in Birmingham he defeated the Japanese Yukimasa Nakamura in his first fight and then retired against the Mongols Pürewdordschiin Njamlchagwa. In 2000 Mazijew won the World Cup tournaments in Moscow, Sofia and Prague. In May at the European Championships in Wroclaw , he finished seventh. At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 he defeated the Argentine Martín Ríos after one minute, in his next fight he was eliminated against the Kazakhs Ivan Baglajew after 3:29 minutes.

2001 defeated Mazijew at the Tournoi de Paris in the semifinals Larbi Benboudaoud and in the final with Benjamin Darbelet another French. At the World Championships in Munich he lost in the semifinals against the Iranian Ārash Miresmāeli and in the battle for bronze against the South Korean Kim Hyung-ju . In November 2001 Maziyev won the military world championships. At the European Championships in Maribor in 2002, he was defeated in the quarterfinals by the Slovak Jozef Krnáč . Mazijew won a bronze medal with victories in the hope lap over the Swede Gabriel Bengtsson , the Turkish Hüseyin Özkan and the Georgian Giorgi Rewazischwili . In 2002 and 2004 Maziyev won the World Cup in Moscow, in 2003 he won the World Military Games .
