Úrsula Martín

Úrsula Martín Oñate (born June 1, 1976 in Madrid ) is a former Spanish judoka . She was European champion in 2000 and won the European championship silver in 1997 and the European championship bronze in 1999.

Athletic career

Úrsula Martin fought in the middleweight division, the weight class up to 66 kilograms (until 1997), or up to 70 kilograms (from 1998). She won five Spanish championship titles (1994, 1995, 1999, 2000 and 2003).

In 1994 she won the Junior World Championships and two weeks later she finished seventh at the Junior European Championships. Her first major championship participation in the adult class was the 1997 European Championships in Ostend. After victories over the Dutch Claudia Zwiers in the quarter-finals and over the Serbian Nada Ognjenović in the semi-finals, she lost to the German Yvonne Wansart in the final . Five months later, she defeated in the quarterfinals of the 1997 World Championships , the Polish Aneta Szczepańska . In the semifinals she lost to the German Anja von Rekowski , in the battle for bronze she lost to the Italian Emanuela Pierantozzi . In 1998 Martín finished seventh at the European Championships in Oviedo .

In early 1999 Úrsula Martín reached the finals at the Tournoi de Paris and took second place behind the Italian Ylenia Scapin . At the European Championships in Bratislava she lost to the Belgian Ulla Werbrouck in the round of 16 , but won a bronze medal with three wins in the round of hope. At the World Championships in Birmingham , she reached seventh place. In May 2000 she defeated Ulla Werbrouck in the semifinals of the European Championships in Wroclaw . In the final, Martín defeated the British Kate Howey . Four months later, the Olympic competitions took place in Sydney . Martín defeated Ulla Werbrouck in the second round and Masae Ueno from Japan in the quarter-finals . In the semifinals she lost to Kate Howey. After her loss to the Italian Ylenia Scapin in the battle for bronze, Martín finished fifth. In the next few years Úrsula Martin won several world cup tournaments, in 2001 in Budapest and 2002 in Warsaw and Rome. However, she no longer took part in international championships.

Úrsula's sister Beatriz Martín also took part as a judoka in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
