Sharon Lee (Judoka)

Sharon Denise Lee (born March 13, 1963 in Birmingham ) is a former British judoka who was second in the 1989 World Championship.

Athletic career

The 1.75 m tall Sharon Lee fought in the heavyweight and open classes. In 1986 she won a bronze medal in the framework program of the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. Two years later at the European Championships in Pamplona in 1988 Sharon Lee won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division. At the 1989 World Championships in Belgrade, she finished seventh in the heavyweight division. In the open class, she defeated the Belgian Ingrid Berghmans in the semi-finals and won silver behind the Cuban Estela Rodríguez . At the end of 1989 she reached the final in the open class at the Fukuoka Cup and lost to the Chinese Zhuang Xiaoyan . At the Commonwealth Games in Auckland in 1990 , judo was an official competition. Sharon Lee won both heavyweight and open class. Also in the European Championships in 1990 in Frankfurt am Main Lee approached in two weight classes. She finished seventh in the heavyweight division. In the open class, she defeated Monique Aarts from the Netherlands in the semifinals and Nathalie Lupino from France in the final . A year later at the European Championships in Prague in 1991 Sharon Lee lost to a Polish woman in both semi-finals: Beata Maksymow won the heavyweight division and Renata Szał won the open class . After a defeat against Swetlana Gundarenko from the Soviet Union in the battle for bronze, she finished fifth in the heavyweight division, in the open class she lost the battle for bronze against Nathalie Lupino.

In 1992 the Olympic Games in Barcelona included competitions in women's judo for the first time, but not in the open class. Sharon Lee lost to Zhuang Xiaoyan in her first heavyweight fight. After a victory in the hope round against the Spanish Immaculada Vicent , Lee was eliminated against the Hungarian Éva Gránitz . In her last year as Active Sharon Lee retired in both the European Championships in 1993 and at the World Championships in 1993 in the hope round.
