Xu Yanmei

Xu Yanmei ( Chinese  许艳梅 , Pinyin Xŭ Yànméi ; born February 9, 1971 in Nanchang ) is a former Chinese water diver . She once took part in the Olympic Games and won gold in the process.

life and career

Xu Yanmei's parents worked in a factory that made airplane engines. At the age of eight she began her athletic career as a gymnast . After two years she switched to diving. At the Asian Games in Seoul in 1986 , Xu made her international debut and won silver from the tower. In the run-up to the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Xu Yanmei lost the pre-Olympic competition in the South Korean capital against Guan Xueqing , who could not prevail in the Chinese Olympic qualification. In the Olympic competition , Xu won the gold medal with 445.20 points ahead of the two Americans Michele Mitchell (436.95 points) and Wendy Williams (400.44 points).

In 1991, Xu Yanmei retired from an active sports career. She studied Chinese Overseas Affairs at Hainan University . She now works in the Sports Science Department of the Hainan Culture and Sports Bureau.
