Liu Wei (table tennis player)
Liu Wei (born November 27, 1969 in Shandong ) is a Chinese table tennis player . She won five gold medals at world championships in the 1990s .
Career
From 1989 to 1995, Liu Wei was nominated four times for world championships. She won gold in doubles with Qiao Yunping in 1993 and silver in 1995 behind Deng Yaping / Hong Qiao . In 1995 she was also third in the individual. In mixed she became world champion in 1991 , 1993 and 1995 with Wang Tao . It was the first time that a couple won the mixed competition three times in a row. She won another gold medal in 1995 with the Chinese women's team.
In 1996, Liu Wei qualified for the Summer Olympics , where she won silver in doubles with Qiao Yunping .
After the Olympic Games, Liu Wei retired from competitive sports. She played another three years in the Japanese league at Sakura Bank Club . In 1999 she returned to China and began studying. In 2003 she founded the Peking University Founder Table Tennis Club . The aim of this is to combine studies and competitive sports.
Due to her success, she was inducted into the ITTF Hall of Fame by the world association ITTF .
Namesake
There is also a male Chinese table tennis player named Liu Wei . This was committed in the 1995/96 season by the German district division TG Donzdorf (Baden-Württemberg) for a few games in order to secure promotion to the state league.
