Liu Xia (judoka)

Liu Xia ( Chinese  刘霞 ; born January 6, 1979 in Qingdao ) is a former Chinese judoka who won an Olympic silver medal in 2004.

Liu Xia had already competed in World Cups in 1997, but it took a few years to achieve an international breakthrough. At the Student World Championships in 2002, she finished second in the heavyweight division and won in the open class. In 2003 she won the heavyweight division at the Universiade in Jeju . In 2004 the 1.78 m tall Liu Xia switched to the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 78 kilograms. At the Asian Championships she won the silver medal behind the Japanese Sae Nakazawa . Three months after the Asian Championships, the Olympic Games took place in Athens . Liu Xia won her first four fights, in the semifinals she defeated the Ukrainian Anastasiia Matrosova . In the final she was defeated by the Japanese Noriko Anno after 4:38 minutes .

After a break in 2005, Liu Xia returned in 2006 and won the bronze medal at the World Team Championships with the Chinese team. In 2007, the Chinese women won. Also in 2007 Liu Xia won the Asian Championships by beating the Mongolian Lkhamdegd Purevjargal in the final . In 2008, Liu Xia was once again part of the team that won bronze at the World Team Championships.
