Tong Jian ( Chinese  佟 健 , Pinyin Tóng Jiàn , born August 15, 1979 in Harbin ) is a Chinese figure skater who starts in pair skating .

Tong was born in Harbin, the center of Chinese figure skating. He began figure skating at the age of six, initially as a single runner and because of his ability to jump, which he judged to be insufficient, as an ice dancer . In 1993 he switched to pair skating because he found it more interesting and saw no international perspective for himself in ice dancing.

His first figure skating partner was Zhang Yue. In 1993, his coach Yao Bin , who, together with partner Bo Luan, was the first Chinese participant in world championships in pair skating in 1980 , brought him together with Pang Qing . When Yao went to Beijing, Pang and Tong were without a coach until 1997 when he returned. As a junior, Pang / Tong caused little stir. The Junior World Championships from 1997 to 1999 finished them in fourteenth, ninth and eighth place. In 1999 they moved to the seniors and made their debut at world championships and four continents championships , where they placed fourteenth and fifth respectively. In 2000 they became Chinese pair skating champions for the first time.

In 2002 Pang / Tong won the gold medal at the Four Continents Championship in Jeonju and thus their first major international title. In their first Olympic Games in 2002 in Salt Lake City they were ninth. In 2004, Pang and Tong became Chinese champions and four continents champions for the second time. At the world championship in Dortmund they won their first world championship medal with bronze behind the Russians Tatjana Totmjanina and Maxim Marinin and their compatriots Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo .

At their second Olympic Games in Turin in 2006 , Pang / Tong narrowly missed a medal in fourth place. They were 0.24 points short of their compatriots Shen / Zhao. Since their fellow compatriots Dan Zhang and Hao Zhang won the silver medal, Pang / Tong were only the third best Chinese couple. This already changed at the subsequent World Cup in Calgary . Shen and Zhao were not there and Zhang / Zhang were able to defeat them, so that they became world champions for the first time .

However, they were unable to defend their world championship title as reigning Chinese champions the following year. They were clearly defeated by Shen and Zhao and had to be content with the silver medal. In 2008 and 2009 Pang / Tong won their third and fourth four continents championships and thus became the sole record holder at this tournament, but missed the podium at world championships. In December 2008 they won the Grand Prix final for the first time .

At their third Olympic Games in Vancouver in 2010 , they achieved a new world point record with 141.81 points in the freestyle and won the silver medal behind their fellow compatriots Shen and Zhao. After Shen / Zhao resigned, Pang / Tong had no problems winning their second gold medal at world championships in Turin .

In February 2011, Pang / Tong won the Four Continents Championship in Taipei for the fifth time in their career . At the World Championships in Moscow they won the short program, but after mistakes in the freestyle they had to be satisfied with bronze behind Aljona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy as well as the newly formed Russian couple Tatiana Wolossoschar and Maxim Trankow .

In the 2011/12 season, Pang and Tong only started at the World Cup in Nice . There they made numerous mistakes and thus missed out on a medal as fourth.

After the 2015 World Cup in Shanghai, Pang / Tong announced their joint resignation, Tong claims to be aiming for work in the association. The couple is also in a private relationship and has been engaged since 2012.
