The decision in pair skating was one of the most controversial: five judges rated the performance of the Russian couple Bereschnaja / Sicharulidze as the best, four that of the Canadian couple Salé / Pelletier. The audience was unanimously of the opinion that the Canadians' freestyle was better. As a result, the International Skating Union (ISU) announced an internal review. On February 15, she announced that unauthorized agreements with the French judge Marie-Reine Le Gougne had been proven. The ISU and the International Olympic Committee decided to award the Canadian couple a second gold medal, which they did six days after the first award ceremony.
