In 1990 Elena Hruschyna became Honcharov's ice dance partner. Still starting for the Soviet Union, they finished fourth at the Junior World Championships in 1992. In 1994 they made their debut at the Senior World Championships and in 1995 at the European Championships . In the same year they got married. In 1998 they played their first Olympic Games and finished in 15th place.
