Massimo Scali (born December 11, 1979 in Monterotondo , Latium ) is an Italian figure skater who starts in ice dancing .

Scali started figure skating at the age of ten. His first ice dance partner was Flavia Ottaviani . With her he won five Junior Grand Prix competitions and in 2000 the Italian Junior Championship. In the same year Scali and Ottaviani achieved their best result in their third participation in the Junior World Championships with fourth place.

After Ottaviani ended her career, Federica Faiella Scalis became a new ice dance partner. Although they had only trained together for a short time, Faiella and Scali were able to qualify for the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City . There they took 18th place. In 2002 they also made their debut at European and World Championships , where they reached 12th and 16th place respectively.

In 2003 Faiella and Scali went as Italian champions for the first time and achieved eighth place at the European championships for the first time among the top ten at European championships . A year later they succeeded in doing this at the World Championships , where they finished ninth. At her second Olympic Games in Turin, after a fall in the original dance, she only came in 13th. After the Olympic season, Faiella and Scali changed coaches and went to Detroit to work with Pasquale Camerlengo and Anselika Krylowa .

In the 2008/2009 season, the Italians won the NHK Trophy and thus their first and only Grand Prix competition . At the European Championships in 2009 they won their first medal at the European Championships with silver behind the Russians Jana Chochlowa and Sergei Novizki . They repeated this success at the European Championships the following year , this time behind the Russians Oxana Domnina and Maxim Schabalin . They decided both the original dance and the freestyle for themselves. In their third Olympics , Faiella and Scali finished fifth in Vancouver . After that, Federica Faiella fell ill and the couple could only return to the ice four days before the World Cup . Nevertheless they managed to win their first and only medal at world championships in front of their home crowd in Turin by achieving bronze .

After the World Cup, Faiella / Scali decided to continue for a year, but had to give up Scalis at the Cup of Russia due to a back injury. At the European Championships they came back and finished fifth. On March 15, 2011 Scali announced the end of the career of the ice dancing couple. On May 9, Faiella and Scali announced their resignation. They justified this with the knowledge gained while watching the World Cup in Moscow that they would still be competitive.
