Competitions
As usual, four competitions took place, individual runs for women and men as well as pair skating and ice dancing . What was new, however, were qualifications before the actual competition. In the individual, the 18 best athletes from the last European Championships were directly qualified for the short program, the other athletes had to run their freestyle in qualification. The ten best in this qualification were also allowed to compete in the short program. The 15 best pairs of the last European Championships were seeded in ice dancing, five pairs came from the qualification. In pair skating, there was no qualification due to the small number of participants. If a skater or a pair who was seeded did not start, another skater or pair from the same nation could take the place.
For the first time, there was no compulsory dance in ice dancing. After a rule change from the previous year, ice dancing consisted only of short and free dancing.
Attendees
38 women, 38 men, 16 couples in pair skating and 27 couples in ice dancing had registered for the European Championships. The athletes came from 35 different countries.
