biography

Sarah Hecken started ice skating at the age of three. The Mannheim ERC runner, who has been trained by the state trainer Peter Sczypa since 1997 , won the national championship title four times in a row in her respective age group, became Baden-Württemberg's senior champion at the age of twelve and defended this title in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011 At the German Championships in Dresden in 2008 she surprisingly won the senior competition at the age of 14. As a single skater, she is the youngest German champion in the history of the German Ice Skating Union. Despite the title win, she was still too young to take part in the European Championship (from 16 years). At the German Championships in Mannheim in 2010, Hecken won the championship title for the second time in her hometown with 157.49 points.

Hecken celebrated her first international success with first place at the Junior Grand Prix 2007 in Chemnitz , which also meant the first victory of a German individual runner in the competition series introduced in 2000. In 2008 bronze followed at the Junior Grand Prix in Merano . In 2009 Hecken took 7th place at the Junior World Championships in Sofia . At the end of the season she surprised with gold at the Triglav Trophy 2009 in Jesenice and at the same time her first victory in an ISU senior competition.

In the 2009/2010 Olympic season she officially started in the senior class for the first time. Due to her 18th place in the world ranking list, she received invitations to the USA and Canada to the ISU Senior Grands Prix held there. As the only German figure skater, she achieved the Olympic standard in two international ISU competitions and qualified for the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver . At the 2010 Winter Olympics , she traveled to the age of 16 years as the youngest athlete of the entire German Olympic team and was awarded the title of Olympic media chick. At the games she reached 18th place. In her debut at the 2010 World Championships in Turin, she finished twelfth and thus again secured her entry authorization for the 2010 Senior Grand Prix Series.

In the 2010/2011 season, Hecken won medals at two ISU competitions. At the IceChallenge 2010 in Graz she came in 3rd place. In Dortmund at the NRW Trophy, she took home silver with a faultless freestyle program with five triple jumps. In January 2011, Hecken in Oberstdorf won her third German championship title with 149.11 points , making her the only German individual runner to take part in the 2011 European Championships in Bern and the 2011 World Championships in Moscow . At the European Championships she missed a place in the top ten by a hundredth of a point and finished 11th with a total of 137.43 points. She showed her best performance of the season at the 2011 World Championships in Moscow. With 155.83 points, she also took 11th place and thus again secured her personal entry authorization for two Senior Grand Prix competitions in the 2011/12 season.
