The Bamberg Social Foundation was founded in 2004 as an amalgamation of the previously municipal foundations in the health and social services of the city of Bamberg . It emerged from the hospital foundation (Klinikum Bamberg), the St. Getreu Foundation (nerve clinic Bamberg), the Antonistift and the Bürgerspitalstiftung (municipal nursing homes). The associated facilities are still the backbone of the company, although further houses have since been bought or founded. The Bamberg Social Foundation has a total of 1,340 beds and day clinic treatment places, 309 of which are in geriatric care.

history

Former General Hospital (1891)

The General Hospital founded by Prince-Bishop Franz Ludwig von Erthal was opened in 1789 , at that time one of the most modern medical facilities in Europe. After secularization , the outdated Altenstift Katharinenspital was dissolved in 1803 at the instigation of Adalbert Friedrich Marcus and instead Michelsberg Monastery was converted into a citizen's hospital. Also on the initiative of Marcus, the use of the former St. Getreu monastery as a district insane asylum declined in 1805 (the later mental hospital).

In 1901 the new surgery at the Old Hospital was built according to a design by Hans Erlwein . In March 1984 the new Bamberg Clinic was completed with 847 beds and the construction costs amounted to 335 million DM (171.28 million euros). The tasks of the old hospital and the state women's clinic were combined in it. The buildings of the old hospital were converted into a hotel and city archive. The building of the women's clinic (Markushaus) became part of the University of Bamberg.

On January 1st, 2004 the clinic, the mental hospital and the old people's homes merged to form the Bamberg Social Foundation. Since then, several subsidiaries of the Bamberg Social Foundation have been founded and measures have been taken to reorganize and expand the company. After the Dr. Schellerer, the medical care center at the Bruderwald was completed in 2007. The Klinikum am Bruderwald received several new disciplines and will be modernized and expanded in several construction phases. In autumn 2018 the 4th bed tower was inaugurated.
