Andreas Starke (born September 17, 1956 in Hamburg ) is a German local politician ( SPD ) and has been Lord Mayor of the independent city of Bamberg in Upper Franconia since May 1, 2006 .

Andreas Starke grew up in Bamberg. After graduating from the Franz-Ludwig-Gymnasium in 1977 , he studied law at the University of Bremen. During his legal traineeship, he was part of the legal working group of the SPD parliamentary group in Bonn . At the end of 1984 he passed his state examination in law.

Time as a lawyer

He has been practicing as a lawyer in Bamberg since 1985 and as a partner in a law firm since 1988. Until his election as mayor, he worked as a lawyer , his main areas of focus being criminal law and family law.

Political career

In 1988 he ran for the SPD for the office of Lord Mayor of Bamberg for the first time and was able to achieve 40 percent of the votes against the then incumbent Paul Röhner ( CSU ), which was considered a sensation in the more conservative Bamberg. In 1990 he was elected to the Bamberg city council as the top candidate of the SPD, and from 1995 he was chairman of the SPD city council group. In 1994 he ran a second time and got into the runoff, while the CSU candidate Rudolf Grafberger missed the runoff with 26.48%. He then lost the runoff election against Herbert Lauer , who was mayor from 1994 to 2006. In the election on March 12, 2006, Starke received 45.9 percent of the vote in the first ballot. In the runoff election on March 26th, he prevailed against the CSU candidate Peter Neller and was elected Lord Mayor of Bamberg with 71.9 percent as the first Social Democrat. He ran as a joint candidate of the SPD, the FDP and two independent groups of voters , the Free Voters and the Bamberg Realists. In the runoff election, he was also supported by the GAL and the Bamberg Citizens' Block, who had run their own candidates in the first ballot.

In 2008, 2013 and 2018 he was elected to the district assembly of Upper Franconia via a list of the SPD . Starke has been Vice President of the District Assembly since 2013.

In 2012, Andreas Starke ran again as a candidate for the election of the mayor against Gerhard Seitz (CSU / BBB) and Wolfgang Grader (GAL). He received 54.88% of the vote. On August 19, 2019, Starke announced that he would run again in the Mayor election in March 2020. With 59.3% of the votes cast, he was re-elected on March 29, 2020 in a runoff election against Jonas Glüsenkamp (Green Bamberg).

In his free time, Andreas Starke does volunteer work. From 1998 to 2007 he was chairman of the Bamberg tennis club.

Andreas Starke is the brother of Christoph Starke, who was the soccer coach of FC Eintracht Bamberg and the predecessor club 1. FC Eintracht Bamberg and SpVgg Bayreuth . He has been a member of the SPD city council since 2008.
